The Bolin Grand Piano
"It is one of the most unbelievable instruments I’ve ever played. I fell in love with it the first time I touched it."
– Bill Evans
"The Bolin Grand, one of a kind and a great source of inspiration while working in the recording studio during the ABBA sessions!"
– Benny Andersson
The Bohlin Grand Piano is a unique and innovative instrument, designed by Swedish luthier and piano maker Georg Bolin (1912–1993). Unlike traditional grand pianos, it features a welded steel frame instead of cast iron, allowing for a richer overtone spectrum and a more dynamic tonal response.
Originally built for Bill Evans, one of jazz history’s most influential pianists, the piano was designed to enhance expressiveness and control, aligning with Evans’ delicate touch and harmonic depth. In 1967 the piano was acquired by Metronome studio.
During the 1970s, it was extensively used by ABBA here in the studio, earning the nickname “The ABBA Grand Piano”. It was used on nearly all of their recordings between 1973-1977, including Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia.
